Why Did They Ghost You All of The Sudden

Imagine talking to or dating someone for a while, and then suddenly, out of nowhere, *poof* they vanish into thin air, without any explanation. Suppose you have ever experienced a situation like this before. In that case, you are familiar with the pain and confusion that comes with it. According to a 2018 research published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, a quarter of the 1,300 participants polled have been ghosted by a partner. A fifth stated that they had ghosted someone.

While the phrase “ghosting” may sound like a fun Halloween joke, the act itself may be pretty harmful. “You’ve maintained communication, rapport, and regular means of contact, and then that person suddenly disappears with no way to contact them,” Natalie Jones, PsyD, explains. “In terms of communication lines, that individual has all the cards,” she says. And that may make you feel ignored, devalued, and downright awful.

What causes people to ghost someone they once seemed so interested in? After all, how difficult can it be to text, “I think you’re a fantastic person, but I don’t believe we’re compatible” or “I can’t keep talking to you because I met someone that I’m interested in starting a relationship with and it wouldn’t be fair to either of you to keep this going.” That’s all there is to it if you don’t want to vanish entirely.
