When is it okay to burn bridges with people?
We have probably all heard quotes and lectures on the importance of not burning bridges. Well, what if those bridges have already got you to the other side of where you need to be, and to step foot on the same one again, you would self-destruct? That is what the article is about.
Every person, lesson, and experience we have in one way or another help shape us but ultimately, they teach us many things. So with that being said, I don’t believe burning bridges is necessarily a bad thing. Buring a bridge with someone does not have to mean that you do some destructive act that ruins your relationship with someone. Instead, it could be a calculated decision to cut ties with someone who no longer serves a useful or meaningful purpose in your life.
When people choose to reinvent themselves or better their lives, they often need to take inventory of who they communicate with, who they spend time with, and whose advice they listen to. When evaluating a relationship of any kind, weighing the pros and cons is essential. Ask yourself the following questions to start.
- Is this person a positive or negative influence on my life?
- How do I feel after spending time with or talking to this person?
- Does this person respect my boundaries?
