The Science Behind Male Baldness

Hair loss is an issue that most men will face at some point in their lives. While several factors can cause baldness, male pattern baldness (MPB) is the most common form of hair loss seen in men. What Causes Male Baldness?

At its core, male pattern baldness is a genetic condition caused by hormones called androgens. Androgens are primarily responsible for the development of male sexual characteristics, but they also have an impact on hair growth. When the body produces too much of a type of androgen known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT), it causes the hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop making new hairs. This process typically starts at the temples or crown of the head, leading to a receding hairline or thinning hair on top.

The exact cause of increased DHT production isn’t known, but it’s believed to be linked to genetics and hormones. Stress, poor nutrition, certain medications, smoking, illness, and other lifestyle factors may also contribute to increased levels of DHT in the body.
