Everyone experiences unrequited love at some point in their lives. Maybe you’ve been rejected, or the person you love isn’t interested. It can be a harrowing and lonely experience. But it is possible to move on and find happiness again. Here are some tips to help you get over your unrequited love.

Take Time to Heal

It’s important to give yourself time and space to grieve the loss of your relationship, even if it never became official. Don’t rush the process; allow yourself to feel all the feelings that come with a broken heart, such as sadness, anger, and disappointment. In time, these feelings will pass, and you will start feeling better again.

Focus on Self-Care

After a breakup or a rejection, it can quickly spiral into negative patterns of thinking or behaviors, such as isolating yourself from friends or neglecting your physical health. Instead, make sure you are paying attention to your mental and physical well-being by doing things like getting enough sleep, eating healthy meals, exercising regularly, talking with friends and family about how you’re feeling, and finding activities that make you happy, such as playing an instrument or joining a sports team.

Reality Check

When we’re in the throes of unrequited love, we tend to idealize our beloved — they become perfect in our minds and memories — but this isn’t realistic. Try not to romanticize them too much; remind yourself of their flaws so that it’s easier for you to move on when the time comes.

Additionally, try not to obsess over what might have been “if only….” Finally, remember that there is no guarantee that things would have worked out any differently if they had reciprocated your feelings; there are always two sides to a relationship, so something else would likely have gotten in the way eventually, anyway.

Unrequited love can be heartbreaking but don’t lose hope — know that you can heal from this pain and come out stronger on the other side. K

Keep taking care of yourself by practicing self-care habits and being mindful of how you think about the situation; this will make the healing process smoother for you in the long run. Most importantly — be patient with yourself — healing takes time!
