How to Handle Conflicts and Disagreements in a Relationship
Conflict is unavoidable in any relationship but doesn’t have to be destructive. Learn how to fight fair and keep your relationship strong.
Pick a space for talking about it.
When you decide to talk about it, pick a completely neutral space. Choose a place where you can both be comfortable.
It’s essential that both parties feel calm and relaxed when you start discussing disagreements — and preferably not too hungry either. When our blood sugar drops, we become more likely to get defensive and less likely to listen objectively; we also tend not to want to admit when we’re wrong as quickly under these conditions (since realizing it could mean giving up something).
Be sure neither person has had anything substantial within 3 hours before starting this process; otherwise, they’ll argue over who gets the last cookie while waiting for their blood sugar levels to return.
Decide how you want to approach the conversation.
