How to Deal With a Chatty Person & Get Them to Stop Talking
Talking is a natural element of our existence as humans. What sets us apart from animals is our ability to listen to the dreams, anxieties, joys, pains, wants, and defeats of others — and they, in turn, can listen to ours.
The flow of conversation usually follows a regular pattern. One person speaks, then pauses to let another person talk for a few moments, much like participants in a game — but if you aren’t given the time to speak without being interrupted, it can sap your emotional energy and leave you feeling drained. Someone’s continuous talking could make it impossible to get any work done, or it might take away the quiet times in your day that you’ve been longing for.
We all know people who talk without listening, who appear to believe that what they have to say is as exciting to everyone else as it is to them, and who don’t seem to realize that listening is an essential component of communicating and connecting with others.
Have you ever been talking with someone, and they kept talking and talking and talking, and you couldn’t get them to stop? You don’t want to be disrespectful by interrupting them outright, but you do need (and want) to bring the conversation to an end.
There is a giving and taking between talking and listening in the best of communication…
