Whether for the first time or just trying to make a good impression on a new friend you like, the fear of saying something awkward or inappropriate can be incredibly overwhelming. What if I say something dumb? What if I accidentally say something that makes them think I’m weird? What if they don’t like me back?! Don’t worry — I’ve got your back! As someone who has experienced this many times in her life (and continues to do so now), here are some tips on how not to screw up:

Don’t be afraid to make eye contact.

You don’t need to be afraid of your crush. They’re a person. You can talk to them like any other person.

  • Don’t be afraid to make eye contact — but don’t stare at them too much! The key is moderation: if you look away too often, it’ll seem like you’re shy and scared, but if you stare all the time, they might not feel comfortable talking with you and will get creeped out. So find the balance between looking away and looking back that feels best for both of you.

Remember that your crush is a human being.
