It’s critical to let the person (or persons) you’re dating know if you don’t want anything serious. Lindsey Metselaar, a relationship consultant who specializes in millennial dating and the presenter of the We Met at Acme podcast, advises, “Make it obvious from the start that you’re not seeking for something serious.” “The other person then has the option of saying they aren’t interested, or thinking about it and deciding they are.”

You don’t have to make a big deal out of it or even bring it up the first time you hang out, but saying something as simple as, “I enjoy spending time with you, but I want you to know that I’m not looking for anything serious right now” can go a long way.

You Still Need Respect

Casual dating still entails being in a relationship with someone, and respect is essential in any relationship, whether casual, serious or somewhere. According to Metselaar, this entails treating the person with the same care as you would any other human being — just without the commitment.

Do What You Please
