A common misconception is that a strong emotional connection with your partner just happens, without being built upon. However, it’s important to remember that all relationships take work to maintain and grow. In addition, a solid emotional bond is built upon communication, respect, and trust. To develop a strong emotional connection with your partner, you must first be willing to make time for each other.

Openly express your feelings.

No one can read your mind, and you may find that you’re tempted not to express your feelings to avoid conflict or because you think they’ll be too difficult for the person hearing them. It’s essential, however, that if something is bothering you or making you happy, let it out! This will help prevent those pesky silent, festering thoughts from turning into resentful anger.

It’s also vital that when expressing yourself and telling someone else how they make you feel, be specific about what has happened (e.g., “the other night when we went out for dinner and my order took a long time coming”) rather than making blanket statements about their ineptitude as a partner (“you never treat me well”).
