Affirmations are words or phrases that we repeat to ourselves to assist us in changing our thinking in ways that would hopefully enhance our lives. These affirmations are usually positive (e.g., “I am happy and healthy”), but they can also be neutral (e.g., “I am present in the moment.”) Affirmations are used to change the way our thoughts think about something, regardless of their emotional tone. For example, perhaps we wish to be less worried, more confident, or more focused.
Affirmations might help us achieve our goals by forming new neural pathways in our brains. Indeed, both study and theory imply that conscious thinking activities, such as affirmations, can become automatic with time. For example, consider how long it was before you discovered the solution to 2 + 2. Then, you needed to count and think about it. Your brain now knows the answer without you having to think about it.
